Vandita Sharma takes charge as Chief Secretary

Bengaluru: 1986-batch senior IAS officer Vandita Sharma took charge as the 39th Chief Secretary of Karnataka on Tuesday. She replaces P Ravi Kumar, who retired from service. Vandita is the fourth woman chief secretary after Teresa Bhattacharya (2000), Malathi Das (2006) and K Ratna Prabha (2017).

Wearing masks mandatory in Karnataka

The Karnataka Government on Monday issued new guidelines making wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing compulsory. The decision was taken at a meeting headed by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai with senior ministers, officials and the COVID-19 technical advisory committee consisting of experts. The new guidelines have been issued in the state amid concerns over a possible fourth wave.

Bengaluru gearing up for Khelo India University Games

Bengaluru: The Government of Karnataka, along with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, is all geared up to host Khelo India University Games 2021, the biggest national sporting extravaganza post pandemic in association with Jain University. The second edition of the Khelo India University games was supposed to be held in the year 2021 but was postponed to 2022 due to the Covid -19. The event, which aims to create a platform for youth to showcase their sporting excellence and provides universities from across India a chance to showcase their supremacy outside the education curriculum, is slated to begin on April 24 and conclude on May 3. The sporting extravaganza will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice President Sri Venkaiah Naidu. Over 4,500 participants representing around 190 universities will vie for top honours in 20 different sports including indigenous sports like Mallakhamba and yogasana being introduced for the first time in Khelo India University Games 2021.

BMTC launches digital pass

Bengaluru: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), on Wednesday, launched a digital pass system that will allow passengers to purchase daily, weekly, and monthly passes online. People can buy the BMTC's daily, weekly and monthly passes through the mobile application Tummoc and they've to show it on their mobile phone to the conductor. The digital pass will be generated along with a unique ID, validity and dynamic QR code.

Karnataka Government hikes subsidy given to SC ST communities under Land Ownership Scheme

Bengaluru: Karnataka Government has decided to increase the subsidy given to SC/ST communities from 15 lakh rupees to 20 lakh rupees under the Land Ownership Scheme. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced this in Bengaluru yesterday during the Babu Jagjivan Ram Award function. He also announced that Babu Jagjivan Ram Self Employment Scheme will be introduced within a week for the SC/ST Communities. He also announced free power up to 75 units for these communities in the rural areas. Another scheme to impart skills training to these communities was also announced yesterday. They will also be trained to appear for the competitive exams.

Spoken English from primary classes in Government Model Schools

Bengaluru: Spoken English will be taught from primary classes in the proposed “government model schools,” a new project announced in the recently tabled State Budget, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education B.C. Nagesh said. Participating in a round table conference organised by Kannada Sahitya Parishat on Kannada schools in the city on Tuesday, Mr. Nagesh also said the State Government had already begun experimenting with bilingual textbooks in Kannada and English at English-medium schools run by the State, and it was an experiment worth considering to be expanded.
